Mario told me when he was trying to find a shop to do his chrome in Los Angeles he'd send them a fork to chrome (crown and ends) and see how they did. He told me a couple of the chrome shops ruined the fork he sent by too aggressive buffing (the fast cutting garnet compound stage of buffing I'd guess) and he had to scrap the forks.
I can imagine there would be lots of ways to ruin a frame if they could ruin something as simple as a fork crown and fork ends.
