So... how did Coppi do at that year's Giro? His Bianchi team won the stage 1 team time trial, putting reigning World Champion Coppi in the pink Leader's Jersey, but from then on he had a comparatively lack-lustre performance, although he did manage to win the mountainous stage 20. Coppi would go on to take the green Mountains jersey, and finish 4th on G.C., thirty-one minutes behind the unknown Swiss winner Carlo Clerici, with Hugo Koblet in 2nd and Nino Assirelli in 3rd.
And what about the 1954 Tour de France??? The Italians didn't send a team to France that year!

All Against Him
Fausto Coppi, "super champion", and the man to mark in 37th the Giro d'Italia. Winner of five editions (a record owned by Fausto ... shared with Alfredo Binda), and also triumphant in the last two Giros, Coppi races this year for two records: first being most Giro's won, that the champion wants all for himself, with six trophies; and second for consecutive victories, currently held by Binda at three (in ' 27, ' 28 and ' 29) that Coppi could equal this year. All will be against him: but he shows no fear. And he very warmly bids all, a heartfelt "I'll see you in Milan".
