Well, perhaps well-painted frames don't lose paint except from negligence,but I have seen paint jobs peel with no mechanical damage. Worst I ever saw on a supposed good quality frame were several LeJeune frames at a shop in Houston maybe 5 years ago. These were new frames at the time, I think Reynolds 853, supposedly made in Soth Africa by a manufacturer with some slight connection to the original French operation. No sign of impact, the paint was simply peeling off in places.

While that is a bit overharsh, I would implore folks not to use a hammer to install headset cups. You don't need "the proper tools", just go down to the local hardware store and get a length of 1" all-thread, two 1" nuts to match, and a couple washers. Cheaper than a hammer, way cheaper than a paint job.
