Well, the valve stem can move around a lot, which I suppose could result in cutting the stem on the edge of the hole. At least this must have been the belief, since they used to make adapters, which were basically shims which fit into the Schrader rim holes to reduce the diameter to fit a presta valve stem. They are still around, and in fact I bought some recently (at Nashbar maybe) for my Schwinn Volare which had the original rims dilled for Schrader valves.
