Most current presta tubes seem to have a big enough metal seat for the valve stem that they work fine, but no guarantees. I do screw on a retention nut, but I do that on Presta rims, too, to keep the stem from moving around when I'm pumping up the tube. Oh, and one somewhat less successfully: with rims with a pretty wide channel, I've occasionally ground off the sides of an appropriate washer whose center was presta-appropriate, and either glued it in, or let the rim tape hold it in place. Bit more of a pain, with few benefits.
