Subject: [CR]Price guides...... a British / Irish Viewpoint

Guys, I have been reading the varied contri's that have appeared and recall a recent one on one conversation with Alex von Tutschek... '' Willie, in the UK there are maybe 5000/6000 classic bicycle enthusiasts.... as far as serious collectors i guess i know of around 30 /40 who are 'real' collectors, so its a very small if reasonably active market.''.. We were discusssing the ''dismal'' [ relatively ] swop meet jumble i ran in early February.. here in ULSTER where i know there's a lot of real old kit around but haven't yet hit the motherlode!!!

I think its probably prorata Stateside, what i think we have to appreciate is that there are guys talking bikes who wouldn't know a bottom bracket from a dropout much less what Tullio designed in his toothed dropouts. these guys hear that there are a few bucks to be made in old bikes buy a few perhaps hit lucky and away they go.. Yes Price guides would be a boon to those Guys, for the rest of us with experience behind us , i don't feel any great need to educate or empower the non collector,if they are really serious they should have all the resources that we have, their Brain , PC and their wallet.. I have seen it in other fields, guys with a few bucks looking for a quick score, they claw about and mess the market up for the decent enthusiast.. Now.... where did i put that front ended.... Masi?
