It's gone WAY beyond Suginos and colored Deep V's, and San Francisco is ground-zero in the States. Phil Wood started producing colored hubs at the behest of Freewheel Hayes (a really excellent shop) and the MASH collective, Nitto is doing limited runs of anodized stuff, and HED3 tri-spoke carbon wheels are in high demand. Bleeding-edge design firms are creating limited-run shoes and hats that sell for astronomical prices, and kids spend thousands of dollars (that's not hyperbole) building track bikes for the street.

The downside is that prices are a little insane right now, the upside is that once folks get over blinging out their bikes they start looking for classic (in the sense that we use it) bikes.

Old Italian and Belgian track iron are very much sought after by fixed-gear riders right now and as a result a lot of bikes that might have moldered away are being found, restored, and ridden, and ridden hard.

There are even a couple of stores in Los Angeles that cater to these new bicycle riders. It's an actually "cool" thing to do, with it's own style, equipment (say, Velocity DEEP dish) and lingo. I have no idea how this started, but it seems to have gotten more youngsters on bikes than anything Lemond, Armstrong or the ABLA (?) could do.
