I did not want this to be my first post about the 2007 L'EROICA .................................

Well it was a pretty sad scene to come across. At the 60km mark or so I had been passed by an ambulance and immediately did not like the sounds of a siren during the event. The scene was a very sharp right turn(T intersection) which is preceeded by a long dirt and gravel downhill (the kind of terrain we had all come to ride) I found some speed on the downhills seemed to help bike control but as I have said year after year braking on this kind of surface is difficult at best. Coming down the hill I could see 2 ambulances stopped with the crews dealing with someone on the other side of a low stone wall, other than a blue bike visible on the ground I could see no more but did hear the sounds of a helicopter coming down the valley. My guess is he was unable to brake sufficently to make the turn and had run into the wall and somersaulted over it. We asked Giancarlo the organizer about his condition when we got back into town and he said he was on his way to the hospital, later he said the riders condition was very grave and the doctors were not very hopeful. So an event full of good cheer and inspiration ended on a very down note.

My report of L'EROICA 2007 will have to wait a little longer....................
