Colin Chapman is one of my great heroes (some may have noticed that my eBay handle is "LotusF1"). Like Pino Moroni, the original 1970s Weyless folks, Hi-E and others -- Colin was truly cutting edge. Between Chapman at Lotus and Jim Hall at Chaparral, they likely produced the bulk of the major innovations auto racing technology in the 60s and 70s. And, yes, their cars often broke. But like fine cycling innovators, we wouldn't be where we are today without them.

P.S. One of my most prized possessions is a letter Colin Chapman personally sent to me in 1968 (when I was about 13) thanking me for the letter of sympathy I sent him upon the death of Jim Clark. It is framed with a photo of Clark on my office wall.

I suspect that the fact that it was their first vacation in 20 years may have influenced that attitude...
