Dear Neil, thanks a lot for the reply. I think I can pull this bike for 15 euros so the easiest thing is if I just buy it and upload some pics to compare with your catalogue. If the bike is not of interest, I'll flood the freewheel with superglue and loctite, take a boltcutter to anything that could operate the brakes, chuck on racing bars and flog it on ebay for 1500 bucks as a vintage traditional old school fixie conversion. Best Nick March, Mont de Marsan, 40, France

I have a 1938 Rudge-Whitworth catalogue, and it lists a number of models wi th 28 inch wheels, which could be supplied with hub brakes, or hub brakes w ith Sturmey 3-speed gear, as optional extras. Since Sturmey also supplied hub brakes (and hub brakes incorporating 3-and 4-speed gears) after the wa r, I think it's going to be difficult to establish the age of this machine from your description alone.
