Hi, Gang-

I've been following the recent discussion about our '83 line of demarcation....I, too, have often wondered how that was arrrived at; but as a relative newcomer, I kind of kept my own counsel . On the local Portland Vintage Velo rides, we use 1986 as a cut-off date (not rigidly enforced, either- pretty much anyone is welcome), so as to not exclude last-generation SR stuff. BTW- just take a look through the 'Data Book' or 'The Dancing Chain'....you'll see many examples of vintage equipment that could be said to violate our set of rules- indexed shifting by Nivex & Cyclo, hydraulic brakes & shifting, clipless pedals (Cinelli M-71, and others). I do support the idea of this cut-off date being adjusted occasionally, as today's innovation is tomorrow's antique.

Favorite bike books- I just mentioned two of them above; their value as reference material & art objects is beyond compare, IMO. "The Unknown Tour de France", by Les Woodland, is another great one- a whole book devoted to the TDF's long history of scandal & skullduggery; immensely entertaining, with great pix! Also, "Flying Scotsman", by Graeme Obree- Graeme is one of my all-time cycling heroes....a little-known rider with a home-made bike, and virtually no sponsorship, who shattered the Hour Record (several times), and became World Champion; all the while struggling with bi-polar disorder, depression, and the U.C.I.

Finally, I need to get rid of some rather esoteric (and expensive!) bits of gear: 1) Last-generation Record 'Delta' Brake Caliper set- Excellent condition, fully intact. The very high price includes an NOS set of pads; the calipers currently have Matthauser 'C' pads installed. $300, plus $15 shipping/insurance in CONUS. 2)Airlite Hi-Flange track hubs, double-sided rear, 40/32. These have the rare red-anodized flanges, and are in near-perfect condition, no rust, no fading. NOS nuts front & rear .$275, plus $15 shipping/insurance in CONUS. 3)'Legnano'-stamped Ambrosio/3tt bar & stem set, with Universal levers (very nice white hoods). 11cm stem, 38cm bars, stem is stamped 'legnano', bars are stamped 3ttt 'Grand Prix'. All in excellent condition, bars are even wrapped in 'Olmo' brand red PVC 60's tape, Velox plugs. $155, plus $22 shipping/insurance in CONUS. 4)1967 Campy NR crankset (I believe this is the first model with 144mm BCD; correct me if wrong), 170mm, no date code, 42/50 rings. Beautiful condition....includes dust caps. $250, plus $15 shipping/insurance in CONUS

PayPal only please; I use my e-mail address for this. Pix available of all items, after 3pm tomorrow.

Happy Halloween, Larry Myers Portland, OR, USA
