I'm sure there are folks kere, like Hilary, who know a lot more about this than me, but here's my 2 cents.

As I understand it, the old British term "path" is the same as "track". These would only be ridden on velodromes with a fixed gear and no brakes. There were also road/path bikes, which would have provision for fitting brakes and fenders so they could also be ridden on the road for training. The latter could possibly also have used a hub gear.
