Jerry Moos asked: <snip> Can one mix different brands/nationalities of cottered crankarms with BB's or should one match cranks to the same brand BB, or at least the same nationality? I know different nations use different cotter pin sizes, but ...<snip>

My Sutherland 4th Ed doesn't treat this, but my memory from earlier editions is that there are national specification differences, but they are just a few thousandths of an inch. Just enough that I've been able to get away with a slightly undersized spindle, by using a well-set cotter pin. But w/o a lathe, the interference fit is a real bummer. Unfortunately, I just don't remember the sequence of sizes, so I just try one ofthe approximate correct length after aother, until something is found that will work. Any one have the real data?
