To all who have responded: The little light bulb went on and I now understand how it is calculated. The "oh-duhh' angel spoke to me. After three attempts to find a correct fork and a losing battle I will probably send off my fork to someone who can lengthen it. If anyone responded to my query about lengthening the fork steerer., that was the thread. I will see if I can get my Ciocc up and running withthe correct chrome fork with at least 194.1 mm steerer tube. Italian threads, of course. BT

Kenneth Freeman <ken4bikes@att.net> wrote: The available stack height is the difference between the head tube length and the steerer length, in your case this is 183-155 = 28 mm. In order to use that fork on that bike, you need to find a headset that has this stack height. Barnett's Chapter 11 (from a download that used to be available, there might be a more recent version), the Shimano Dura-Ace HP7600 (OT) is the shortest at 30.0 mm, the Campagnolo Veloce (OT) is 33.0 mm, the Tange-Sekei (sic) Levin CDS (also OT) is 33.4 mm, and the Tange-Sekei Levin (traditional but OT) is 38.0.

For on-topic, the Campy NR Pista and Gran Sport are 33.8, the Campy NR Strada is 39.1, the Campy SR Strada is 42.2, the Stronglight A9 is 40.7, and the Stronglight B-10 and C-11 is 43.0; and the Shimano 600EX (HP6207, marginally OT) is 40.0.

I REALLY don't think you can get that fork and frame to work together, unless you can find an odd headset that has a 28 mm stack height. Probably the safest thing to do is get a fork with a steer tube that allows a headset stack of 42.2, then go out and score the best on-topic headset you can, and get the steer tube trimmed to match the headset you have. The installation will work best if you get the head tube reamed and faced to ensure correct alignment of the fixed parts, and press them with a press, even a home-made one.

I found that few bike shops these days are willing to help you think about such a problem, and most are only capable of ordering you the replacement part for a bike. I call this headset hell. You'll be better when you get out.

This is made worse by the fact that many headsets for 1" threaded are no longer made. Bike shop techs are mainly into supporting the product sold by their shop.

Hi Bruce, your stack height is 28mm,

Stack height. (Nuovo) Record Strada (road) is 39.1 mm. Super Record road is taller at 42.2 mm. Record and Super Record Pista (track), Gran Sport, are all 33.7 mm.

So as you can see from the dimensions you are out of luck to fit any Campagnolo, you will need a steerer of 194 to fit a NR headset, and 197 to fit a SR headset, best of luck, been there done that wayne davidson invers NZ............

The offered fork has 183 mm of steerer tube. Now what is the best way to mathematically determine if this will fit the said fork on my frame??? Bruce
