Makes one wonder if the organizers of Paris-Tours will ever run a single-speed version of their race again, as was done in the 1960's. Maybe fall could become the "roots racing" part of the season, to coin a phrase.

A few list members asked me what the pro riders thought of the Eroica covered in CycleSport. Basically it was considered a refreshing change from bunch races run on nicely paved highways. A few quotes: 1. The winner Kobobnev- "It was hard & the dust created a lot of problems, but it was a lot of fun. Everybody has ridden on dirt roads in the countryside when we were kids, & I think it made every- one remember what it was like." 2. Former pro Fiorenzo Magni- "Cycling is much more spectacular when the route & roads shape the race dramatically like they did 50 years ago." Regards, Greg Brooks, Ridgetop,TN, USA
