My father's '78? Raleigh Super Course with Suntour bar-ends and
components came with the cables under the red cloth bar wrap exiting at
the end of the tape.
IIRC these cable outers were bare metal spiral without a vinyl jacket.
It seemed to work well on the couple of times I rode it, friction did
not seem to be a problem.
