Perhaps it was less expensive to grind off the ledge than to machine the countersunk section?
Here's another possibility: Pista cranks were typically 165mm long, too short for a BMX crank. If the bulk of your track cranks were the short version, they might have had no choice but to use the longer road crank. Remember, it's not as though they were churning out millions of both versions at the same time. I'm sure the urge to produce a BMX crankset came upon them quite suddenly, and they had to fit it all into their standard production runs. Cheers, Fred Rednor - Arlignton, Virginia (USA)
