Sorry I know that this topic has been covered. I checked the archives with no luck. How much to ship a frame from the west coast of the US of A to England?
Dave - Best bet is going to be USPS Priority Mail International which takes 6-10 days. You have to get it into a frame box that is less than 108 inches length plus girth, and then it will cost $65.55 plus any insurance, if you do it online. UPS or Fedex would be at least double that. It would be great if the Brits could ship a frame over here that cheap. I usually pay about $140-170 for just a frame.
If you cut down a typical 8" wide bike box so it is about 40" long and 25" tall it will fall withing the guidelines, assuming your frame is no bigger than that. You will need to package it with the fork out of the frame. I use foam pipe insulation to protect the frame all around. You may not know what that is in California but it comes in several sizes to fit all the tubes just right. I can send you some if you can't get it there! Don't get the self stick type. Get the cheap stuff. It's only about $1.50-2.00 for a 6-foot length at Home Depot. Pad and tie the fork securely so it won't bang around. I got two frames from a well known UK seller this year where the fork was loose in the box and knocked chips in the new paint. And be sure to put a block of some type in the rear drops to prevent them from getting crushed. A piece of wood dowel, two washers and two wood screws will do nicely.
