Fred, Richard and All:

http://www.campyonly.com/history/catalogs.html Campagnolo Catalog 18, page 47 absolutely supports Fred's observation about same cups/different spindles for Record and Sport for the cat17,18-applicable-vintage gear.

In that listing, Campy designates the fixed/adj rifled cups 745/A and 746/A for Nuovo Record, with the non-rifled fixed/adj cups 745/746 suitable for Record, Cyclocross, Triple & Sport spindles.

Of the relative vintage of catalogs most often discussed on the CR list (16, 16 supplement, 17, 17a, 17a supplement, 18) the listed page is the only one I could find that actually shows a line drawing to indicate rifled versus non-rifled cup application. ---- As a philosophical statement, I would respectfully suggest that chainline is more important than vintage correctness when it comes to spindles. For the age of machines we're dealing with here ... it's important to remember that the bb shell may have been tapped and refaced sometime in its history. A slightly aggressive refacing on the fixed side could suddenly push the requirements or your particular machine into a different spindle (a cyclocross spindle might wind up being a better fit than the originally intended road-double spindle).

So ... unless your bb shell is 68.0mm (or 70.0mm) in width ... be prepared to tweak a bit to get the combination that works best for you.

Also remember, this spindle/cup/chainline conversation is incomplete unless you also take into account whether the rear triangle has been cold set/stretched to shove a 126mm (or greater) axle into an originally set 120mm spacing.

As mentioned before on this list, I would also suggest the sometimes exhausting-for-the-impatient cup-spindle-chainline quest is the very reason the adjustable Phil Wood design might be the final solution for those who can't find the perfect Campagnolo spindle for their needs.

So, per Tony Werne's suggestions, I took a look at the chart on the Bicycle Classics Web site. The info there is in accord with the stuff I sent out earlier. (Or vice versa.) But there is one one comment that puzzles me. Near the end of the chart, it says this about the Campagnolo bottom brackets: "There are four types: GS, Record, Nuovo Record, and Super Record (Ti spindle, Alu cups)."

I was only aware of 3 types. That is, I thought Gran Sport and Record were the same. Is it that Gran Sport and Record _cups_ are the same, but the spindles have different finishes? (Which would account for spindles to be used with thin-walled cups appearing in both black and chrome finishes?)

Or is there a Record cup, which is thick walled, but without the rifling? I've seen those from other manufacturers, but never from Campagnolo. Or if I did, it was decades ago - and I didn't notice the subtle differences - since I was merely content to fix and maintain bicycles for fun and (very little) profit.
