Unless I missed the memo, Gitane TDFs were NOT gaspipe bikes, but built out of nice, high-quality tubing (vitus or reynolds, I forget now). they were the poor-man's racing bike. I almost ended up with one myself, but the shop that sold them where I lived was a little too snooty for me. I ended up with a Mondia Special. cooler paint, but probably about the same quality as a TDF, all things considered. You could buy a TDF, with sew-up tires, ready to ride, for under 200 bucks in 1973 or so, where I was.
