My 1971 Gitane TDF was also a poor rider, especially on fast, steep descents because of the steep fork angle and small fork trail. This is the bike I had a spectacular downhill crash on while descending "Big Hill" south of Alpine ,Texas

jeez, Art. I hurt just reading about that.

I owned a TDF briefly, but never rode one. Based on these comments I should amend my previous post to say that the Mondia Special was distinctly superior in design to the TDF. The Mondia was a very well-mannered bike, the veritable platonic ideal of a high-performance sport-bike. I keep looking for another in a color that floats my boat, but I haven't found it yet. Size? yes. color? no. The Mondia orange was a favorite..anyone have one in a 56cm c-t? <g>
