Subject: [CR]CR list 2008 : I have a dream....

I've been watching latest developments on CR with some consternation, and was surprised to say the least to be publicly insulted about the fixed wheel debate that I kept well away from and found rather boring...

Surely the whole bike collection thing is about getting together and talking about something we have in common? My Masi is better than your Herse, fixed wheel is better than derailleur, etc (or the other way round) debates don't seem to lead very far. And humorous or gently teasing posts seem to systematically degenerate into viciousness on this particular list.

Debate can be great fun, but it demands a fair amount of self-restraint to remain on the right side of the line.

Masi, Herse, fixed wheel, Campy, Simplex, Tdf, Cyclotouring, it's all about collecting/ riding /buying / selling / studying old bikes and parts.

So could we maybe in future try to concentrate on the hobby, avoid provocation/rising to the bait/insult/personal attacks, and only post factual emails about new bikes discovered, restoration projects and ideas, historical information, market info (eBay), favourite bikes, reports on events, and anything else factual and potentially interesting to other CR members, and cut out the Clochemerle bit?

I do realise this might all sound a bit angelical, but I really hate it when the list when turns nasty.

Hoping that this won't generate any new debate or insults.
