Emily - this bike rides SO nicely. It feels 'light' and 'zippy' (theres a term, eh ?) - even climbs well. It was the first venture into the CR old bike thing - Charles Andrews (who I didn't know from adam at that time) sold me the frame and got me going. I'm not sure how 27" wheels were chosen - I was at that time scared and unfamiliar with sewups (chuck and others got me over that!).
Ken - Thanks for the nice words and measuring tip I re'measured the BB height, and it's 11 1/4 from the ground up to the center of crank. Since it was sitting there, I measured my new 70's romic - also with 27" wheels - IT was 10.5" !! Perhaps I should learn from some of the pros how to really LAY it over around the tight turns ??
Looking at the photos, the brake pads are indeed low on the calipers.
But I really can't picture having MORE tire clearance with that frame.
Perhaps using the very narrow paselas (the're 1 1/8 actually)
exagerates the look (in 69 they wouldnt have had a 1 1/8 tire
probably?) To me it looks like a lot of clearance. I checked the
catalog on my site, but it doesnt have the original build specs. Also
checked later (73/74) catalogs, and indeed the tires were sewups. Also
found the 68 catalog. Of course there was no Pro model until 69, but on
page 3 were the Super Course, Grand Prix, and Record - and notice the
graphic on that page .. it says : 27" Wheel:
