There are emergency room visits and there are emergency room visits. I'll take a visit to the emergency room any day that resulted from a crash with another cyclist or simply falling off my bike in a fast turn over a visit to the hospital that resulted from being hit by a car. Without stats right now to support my hunch, I'll bet that when car hits bike the resulting emergency room visit is a lot worse than when rider slides to a stop on his left shoulder due to overcooking a turn. (translation -- broken spine is worse than road rash)
