I have the following tandem for sale:
Jack Taylor double-diamond touring tandem. Probably mid-late 1970s. There is a serial number that I can provide, but I don't have it handy at the moment.
The tandem is painted a really beautiful candy green with white box-lining. Paint is near-mint and in excellent condition. A few chips here and there. The overall effect of this original finish is of a near-new frame. All graphics and reynolds stickers are near-flawless. Mondrian graphics.
This is a *tall* tandem, to wit:
Captain section: 57cm top-tube c-c 23" c-c seat-tube approximately 64cm c-t seat tube approximately 34" in-use standover, +/- depending on your tires
Stoker section: 60cm c-c top-tube 22 1/2" c-c seat-tube approximately 59cm c-t seat-tube approximately 33" in-use standover, depending on your tires.
Note that Taylor tandems have long c-t seat-tubes because the tube extends well above the top-tube, as can be seen in numerous examples of this frame. Tandems need not be perfectly sized to perform well (smaller-or-larger-than-ideal-tandems, are mostly a matter of taste or comfort or expection) but take into account the height of the stoker-stem when determining what captain seat-tube will work well for you. If you have questions about this feel free to ask. Usually c-c dimensions are the working dimensions of any tandem...those, and the practical standover height, usually measured at the center of the top-tubes.
Parts include: *Mafac cantis with mathauser pads (I'd replace the pads, but they all work ok) *3ttt bars/stem for the captain. *Jack Taylor-made steel stoker stem, grey enamelled, as original, with nice engraved PIVO bars to fit. *Suntour V-GT Luxe long-cage derailleur, matching front for triple *suntour bar-end shifters. *Phil-wood tandem-specific hubs with rear disc and shimano disc brake. (the disc brake still works, but not all that well..these never did work very well) 40-hole front. 48-hole rear. *27" wheels with Super-Champion alloy tandem rims. *Mafac brake levers with double-cable pull for disc brake *steel seat-posts with clamps and Brooks Pro saddles in useable, if somewhat stiff, shape. *Campagnolo Victory tandem cranks in clean condition. *MKS road pedals with reflectors (Campagnolo SL knockoffs)
Caveats:
*Tandem will be supplied with cranks and bottom brackets *not* installed. Eccentric is original and included. *tires are shot and need to be replaced. * Mafac double-cable levers were always stiff to use. Phil disc hubs were notorious for coming apart under extreme use. This one appears fine, but you never know.
If it were me, for the price I'm asking for this item, I'd remove most of the old parts and put on modern Ergo parts. Just a thought. Get a nice, modern rear disc hub and a modern disc brake to match. Or not. Modern cantis with good pads will give you excellent stopping power under most conditions.
Think of this as a really fine period frame to hang new parts on, and you can sell off the old parts to recoup some of your cost. I would, anyway. Of course, it'll work perfectly fine with the parts that are on it, too!
Price: $675 shipped.
If you pick the tandem up, or I deliver it to you, (within a 100 mile radius) the price is $525.
I have no pics at this time, but if you really need some, I can shoot a few. The tandem is exactly as described above, however. The frame is *extremely* nice, and if it were somewhat smaller, I would keep it, because it looks so pretty. It's hard to find these frames in such fine, original condition.
E-mail me privately if you have more questions, or you're interesting in purchasing the tandem.
