The the Gang,
That was a good one! Pergs has been in San Diego for about a month, but the gathering in La Jolla was the first opportunity we had to hook up. Got to John and Sally's place a little early, so I got the nickel tour of the house and grounds and the Reader's Digest version of all of what has kept John busy this past month. They have secured a prime location La Jolla cottage as their first toehold in California. Apparently this particular Saturday was one of the first appreciably warmer days since the Pergolizzi's brought their New York cold weather with them (homesick already??) My order of chicken arrived a little late, about the time Charles Andrews found us, which eventually resulted in a generous discount off the bill of about $40. Everyone had a good time as we initiated Pergs in how we let the new kid on the block throw a meeting on the west coast. I left around 9:30 so as to go home and rest up for the Sunday ride.
The weather was quite warm, even during the beginning of the ride when we ride on the shaded side of the street in the valley where the coldest overnight air is nestled. It's the coldest part of the ride every time. The 8am start time helps insure it's still cold when we leave from the parking lot. Matty, Peter Gilbert, and friend of his from Colorado named John, Chris Kostman and a lady friend rider, and myself, JB, and Fast Eddie were there along with only a few others. Light turnout on this nice day.
We headed east and out for about 10 miles of pretty much flat road and a good warm up pace. It was reasonably warm through the valley. Once we hit the first preliminary climb a few of us dropped back a little. We took it steady and just kept going until we finally reached the turn and regrouping spot. It was a bit windy at the top on account of a Santa Ana wind condition, which also dries the air which burns you lungs eventually. I came up last, as always; and riding a '74 Colnago with a 5 speed block. We regrouped and started the last few miles of a little more climbing before it starts to go down at last. Everyone except me did the extra loop around the fenceline. My legs were toast so I passed and headed down to wait at the coffee shop. It was nice and warm and I sat outside and munched on a couple of homemade cookies and a large cup of coffee about the size of a small swimming pool. Once everyone else showed up and had coffee, it was time to go down the hill. Six of us rolled out and shortly we were on the first downhill section, which is fairly steep in places and is a bit twisty, but the curves are all full speed in a tuck kind of curves and we generally go down at about 45 or 50 mph and don't have to go past our side of the two lane road nor worry about auto traffic since we are going pretty much the same speed; but there never seems to be any cars on this section of road. A short level spot and then the drop into Harbinson Canyon where again we are doing 50+ at times. Rarely see a car when we go thru here either; but if you do you generally will have to slow for them because we make the decent faster than cars would. Another great drop to the same valley floor we came out on earlier and we've done a loop which leaves us a rolling flattish ride to the starting point. Since the wind is always in our face on the way home we form a single or double paceline and just punch our way through until we finally make it back to civilization. It's a really great ride; but it's even more fun to have guests.

Dale et al- The dinner and then visit to villa Pergolizzi was more fun than a slip and slide. The real fun was todays running of the JB/Alpine ride. Hearty listmembers Joe Bell, Brian
Baylis, Peter Gilbert and myself as well as the local group including Fast Eddy rode the relentless uphill ride of not quite 30 miles to Alpine (elev 4000) A super beautiful day
but the Santa Ana winds seemed to be 'in your face' most of the way but helped with the trip down the mountains on the 50mph + decent. A special thanks to Peter and JB for
keeping this old dog on course- A great ride and great fun
had by all this CR dinner and ride.
