In the years I raced in England I only ever uses a hairnet when I washed my hair, like Mom! racing on the track we had to use a helmet of some kind. NOW a funny story,(Sorry Dale) I was at a rest stop on the bike trail I ride every day, a Chap on a $100k Harley roars up,Leather gear etc. NO HELMET! meets his wife who had his Colnago fancy schamsy Campag do dad equip 50 speed? road bike for him to ride on the bike path, he changes into his skin tight aero bike kit, PUTS ON A HELMET and rides away! Something wrong with this picture! maybe he goes faster on the Colnago than the Harley!

Here's my take:

There's nothing wrong with this picture, John. The explanation is simple. Harley riders make fun of other Harley riders for wearing helmets. Riders of fancy racing bicycles make fun of other riders of fancy racing bicycles for NOT wearing helmets. The guy doesn't like to be made fun of. He probably wears German leathers and helmet when he rides his BMW because that's what BMW riders do. Peer pressure, it seems, is blind to age.

In the 80's, as a teenager, I rode helmetless and raced in a hairnet because that was what the cool guys did. I wear a modern helmet now, but if I wanted to go helmetless I'm not sure I could bring myself to face the scorn of an increasingly self righteous cycling community .
