Gentle Folk,

Jim Young asked:

I visited three (not trusting the first, and not giving up hope after the second) bearing supply houses, and none were able to match the bearings. Further research led to my discovering that Mavic had used a proprietary size for the bearings (SKS) and these had not been manufactured for quite a few years.

Further research with various "old time" bike parts companies took me to Sellwood Cycle Supply in Portland, OR. The owner had "stashed" away eight sets of these bearings and I was able to convince him to sell me one-half of his inventory. They were not inexpensive......

I still have two sets, but I also have two bottom brackets which need to be overhauled. Chuck Schmidt pointed out that you can still use a standard bottom bracket, and I would think that this would be the least expensive way for you to proceed.

All the best,
