Perhaps some of you have encountered this scam on Ebay. Since I consider myself fairly cautious in responding to stuff related to Ebay, this one almost made me bite so I thought I would pass it on if there some others out there who might encounter the same game, and I have not read of others who have encountered it.
You receive what appears to be a legitimate question generated from one of your current auctions from a legitimate Ebay member. (Actually, I think the letter you receive is legitimate, that is, it came from the auction because it appears in your quesitons, though the user name has been hi-jacked.) The letter introduces himself and says he is interested in your auction, but is wary of it because he saw another very similar auction for the same thing recently. They provide you with a link to that auction. The link leads you to what appears to be the Ebay log-in page, requesting that you log in. That's what tipped me off. I was already logged into Ebay so I should not have had to log-in again. After thinking about it for awhile, I logged in with a made-up log-in name and password, which sent me to a page indicating that the auction did not exist.
I assume the purpose of the scam is to hi-jack your legitimate user name and password.
Yesterday I received a warning from Ebay about the message sent to me.
