Most years the race was Berlin-Warsaw-Prague. As Barum is a Check (sic) company it seems they put Prague first. As already said, simpler to call it the Peace Race. My late clubmate Bill Bradley won the stage to Brno in 1958 in front of 50,000 "fans" but they may have been party members instructed to attend.
The great Geordie character Bill Baty (he who appears in the Taylor Bros BBC film) told me a great story about the Peace Race. He said the GB team was hanging on the bunch for as long as possible and taking a real pasting and then blowing up and losing half an hour every day. Bill got sick of this and told the GB team to wait at the start for a minute then set off. They rode the whole stage in an orderly fashion like a team time trial and lost just ten minutes! Apparently the team manager wasn't impressed with Bill's initiative and threatened to send them home if they did it again. ray Green, Harrow, Middlesex
