I have an SR Royal crankset, and a "RALEIGH" logo'd crankset that is built like a Sugino Maxy, i.e. there is a steel rivet that holes the crank arm to the spider. The two cranks seem otherwise identical.
This got me to thinking : did this type of joinery ever break on the Sugino Maxy cranks ??
I wonder if the use of steel in this location - where most aluminum cranks begin to fail in the spider - was an improvement over a totally forged crankset ??
The Sugino Maxy was imho an extremely important crankset to the manufacture of bikes during the bike boom. I got mine for $29.95 in about 1976 ~ that was for a full crankset with 2 replaceable 110 bcd rings and that included a bottom bracket. This ONE crankset brought cotterless cranks to the masses.
