CARLTON FLYER 22.75in 1939 One Owner
Offered for sale is a 22.75in (centre BB to top of top tube) 1939
Carlton Flyer time trial bike with a 22.75in ctc top tube. This is a one
owner bicycle bought in early 1939 by R B Gumbrell of the Brighton
Excelsior CC. It comes complete with two scrapbooks containing press
cuttings relating to time trials he rode and a number of results sheets
for TTs from 1938 and 1939. Carlton Flyers were a popular choice of time
trail bike and one was ridden to victory by Shake Earnshaw in the
National BBAR competition in 1938. This is a rare opportunity to acquire
a bike with real provenance. The Carlton Flyer frame is beautifully
built with some lovely details, the Chater-Lea lugs have been given
great shape and note the lovely scallops to the tube ends at the
dropouts, the shaped mudguard eyes and cut out in the top of the seat
lug. This bike was fitted with some new equipment post-war - Harden
bacon slicer cartridge bearing hubs laced to Constrictor Conloy rims, GB
Hiduminiuim brakes and Chater Lea pedals. The original Chater-Lea
pre-war headclip, bottom bracket, chainset, bars and stem and one brake
lever probably a Bowden are retained. The paintwork is in generally very
good condition and the chrome plating on the head tube and forks is also
excellent. The chrome plating on the rear stays is not quite so good
being dull with a little fine bubbling. Post-war Flyers are not
especially common, pre-war ones are really rather rare. See

Competition frame and forks with a 20.5in ctc top tube. Rear dropout
width is 124mm. This Reynolds 531 double butted frame is in mint
condition with almost no marks to paint or transfers. Please see the

this frame is really very nicely made with sloping fork crown and Campag
long ends. Clearances are for 700C/sprints. $245 - shipping to the USA
will be $130, to Japan and Australia $160, UK £12.

Farrell frames were built by by Wally Green - this one is clearly one of
Wally\u2019s frames bearing his trademark seatstay wrapover. $175 - shipping

HAMILTON-BUTLER 22in 1958/9 The New Claud
Offered for sale is a 22in (centre BB to top of top tube) 1958/9
Hamilton-Butler frame and forks with a 22in ctc top tube. Rear dropout
width is 115mm. Claud Butler went bust in 1957 and he made several
attempts to get back into the bicycle business. The first was with the
help of Evelyn Hamilton (she ran her own bike shop in Streatham in south
London and sold frames under her own name in the 1940s and early 50s).
She was closely linked to Claud Butler (rumours were abounding of a long
lasting affair with Claud) and this frame was one produced for this
first attempt at a come back by Claud. When I interviewed Evelyn
Hamilton in 1986 she spoke very fondly of Claud and told the story of
this attempt at a comeback. However Holdsworth had bought the Claud
Butler name and with Claud having difficulty getting credit the attempt
failed very quickly. Evelyn Hamilton died a few years back in her 90s.
Clearances are for 27in. $145 - shipping to the USA will be $130, to
Japan and Australia $160, UK £12.

LEACH MARATHON 24in 1940s/50s Lovely lugs
Offered for sale is a 24in (centre BB to top of top tube) 1940s/50s
Leach Marathon frame and forks with a 23in ctc top tube. Rear dropout
width is 115mm. This is a very beautiful with some lovely work being
done the Oscar Egg lugs but the paint and chrome are not in very good
condition. However enough remains that the paintwork could be copied -
the lining and details are really rather special. Clearances are for
27in wheels. $195 - shipping to the USA will be $130, to Japan and
Australia $160, UK £12.

MACLEANS 20in 1947/8 Extremely beautiful ornate lugs
Offered for sale is a 20in (centre BB to top of top tube) Macleans fancy
lug frame and forks with a 21.75in ctc top tube. Rear dropout width is
110mm. This early post-war Macleans frame features the most beautiful
lugwork I have seen on such an early frame with gorgeous delicate
cutouts very gothic in design. The frame is in very sound condition but
the finish is poor though most of the original transfers are present and
the original Chater-Lea headclip and headset is included. This is a very
special frame - the lugwork all round is totally outstanding. Macleans
were one of the earliest companies building lightweight frames after WWI
and they built some very good frames but it is not known who was
responsible for their fancy lug frames post WWII. Clearances are for
26in wheels but 700C will also fit. More details on Macleans can be
found at http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/
