Another German manufacturer there at the beginning ---Opel started with sewing machines in 1863,bikes came in 1885, cars in 1899. The bike biz was sold to NSU in 1936. Art Link,San Antonio,TX,USA

If that is so, yes. But I have never heard of them. I know British marques, some as old as 1860's that made it through to 1900. But I'm not aware of any German ones. Doesn't mean there aren't any htough..

I haven't been following this thread closely, and so I haven't seen any references to Durkopp if they have been mentioned. Didn't Durkopp start making bicycle in 1867 or something like that? And they continued until at least the 1950s. That's a pretty long tenure, and I think qualifies them to have been "there at the beginning!"
