Dan, There is an alloy version from Simplex on eBay currently (Not mine). These attached to one of the derailleur clamp mounting bolts (on the Prestige plunger-style front derailleur) by substituting a longer bolt, and it was also secured to the downtube with a simple ring clamp. These were probably the most common ones and were often associated with Peugeots.

There were also many other (nicer) alloy versions by other French companies like Le Fol - the famous mudguard/fender maker.

Dan Polito wrote: several years back i remember seeing a few different chain guards on older city bikes that were bird profiles around the wheel, and then an extended wing along the chain. i can't, for the life of me, now remember where i saw these or even to what particular marques these chain guards were associated with. i think they were french? something also tells me really early peugot city bikes, but i couldn't find anything to confirm that.
