Reading this thread and checking out this very nice website of Frost River Bags, reminds me of a pet project idea I've yet to find materials for. In Canada I once bought this fantastic OILSKIN jacket. From what I learned, Oilskin is an impregnated cotton, canvas material. My jacket has a wonderful dark color, a bit of a strong smell, but it looks really nice. (the jacket actually was made by Outback in Australia).

I've googled the heck out of oilskin to buy some for a handlebar bag, but ended up with lots of dead ends.

Has anyone ever heard of using Oilskin for bike bags or panniers ?? Has anyone any idea where a guy might BUY 8oz (approx) weight, dark brown Oilskin ??

wikipedia says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oilskin

Thanks Rich Pinder Van Nuys, CA (where discussions of Oilcloth REALLY are foolish.... especially this year !)
