There is a lot of controversy about this in the art world, one of the reasons is the conjecture of how 'it is meant to look'. By candlelight

in a church? Through Manet's glaucoma?

I think that the legitimate restoration approach that is inarguable however, is for preservation. This restricts further degradation, a point which is inherent in other points of your argument and valid in our discipline as well.

I will happily buy you a beer at Cirque to argue with someone of your caliber Tom, but I don't really look at the paint while riding...
