While looking through an old address book recently which I created to find British framebuilders, I rediscovered the name of the American that apprenticed at Johnny Berry's shop in Manchester during the summer of 1973. His name is Allen (or perhaps Alan) Wood. At that time he was probably somewhere around 19 years old which would make him 52 to 54 years old today. I would love to be able to talk to him because he could help me unlock the mysteries of how Johnny made frames.

Doug, you need only ask. Alan is a dear friend of mine. I'll provide contact information off line.

Alan still has a bike that Berry built for him in that era and many fine memories of Johnny and his wife, but I'm surprised to hear that he was apprenticed to the builder. Still, Alan is a very modest guy and a talented engineer, so all things are possible.
