It seems to me that "fastback" is a uniquely North American term, originally applied to cars whose roofline sloped all the way to the rear, including the rear window. We just applied it to also describe seat stays that joined the seat lug from behind, rather than on each side. When I left the UK in the middle fifties, they used "hankies", although cyclists still use the traditional method today.
