Does anyone know what happened to the red Laser that used to hang in the back of Conrads bike shop in NYC right above a set of old wooden rollers? I used to go to Conrads when I was fifteen just to look at the bike (that was fifteen years ago).
Like all things, I think the things we love don't need to be explained rationally.
The Laser is pretty and looks real fast, I wanted one as a kid and I still want one- just to be able to have a piece of a dream that consumed me as a kid. That's why I have a Greg Lemond Team Z bike. I still remember looking at pictures of Greg Lemond and Ronan Pensec in the pages of Winning and Velo News and pining for the bike. Same reason I want a Coors Light Serotta, the same one Davis Phinney rode, and why anything with the Mercyx name on it holds a mystique that continues to do this day. Same reason I have so many bikes. I don't NEED them, I want them and no technical reason would ever dissuade me from getting one, finding the foibles in the bike only enhances the pleasures of ownership.
Of course eventually I discovered other irrational exuberances, namely- beer and women, and money's been tight ever since.
