HI CR listees, I just spoke with Sam Braxton's widow,Shirley Braxton, who had a correction for the record, regarding number of bicycles built. Shirley Braxton states that Sam Braxton built 560 bicycles, over the span of his custom frame building. Her son stated under three hundred. She felt quite certain of the number of 560. Shirley was the book keeper of the bicycle shop when it was open,as well as working on the floor with customers and everything else one does in a small, local bicycle business! She said he was building a style of bicycle called ROUGH STUFF,which would be his version of a mountain bicycle before they were called mountain bicycles. Shirley told me she rode her custom BRAXTON TOURING bicycle across the USA with a combination of an ADVENTURE CYCLING touring group and friends over a period of three summers, starting in the mid 1990's when the shop was sold. Shirley will try to get to Dale some information regarding the shop,to be posted to the CLASSIC RENDEZVOUS WEBSITE. Shirley stated that they do NOT HAVE ANY BUILD records for the Braxton bicycles. All the more reason to get information, from someone who is/might be an origianl owner of a custom bicycle, when buying a custom bicycle. Shirley was pleased to hear of the interest in Sam Braxton bicycles and wished us good luck! Yours truly, Marty Walsh in Vienna,VA. USA
