Subject: [CR]re: looking for some panto'd colnago parts

Walter is looking for colnago panto'd parts. He specifies pre-84 and no more.

I'm not sure exactly what he's looking for, but it's worth noting that prior to 1984, Colnago used at least three different pantographing schemes, with entire groups panto'd according to a certain style that is fairly easy to distingush once you see them all.

There were also a number of variations within each style, from part to part (especially in chainrings, cranks, and stems) although the last style, from about 1980, seems to have been the most controlled in terms of what you could get, and what it looked like.

Also, styles seem to have overlapped slightly, but there was still some harmony among the parts and the way they were milled or drilled or pantographed.

Some colnago frames look better (look more harmonious, if you like--as in period-correct), with certain panto'd parts. A late 70s Super with early 70s panto'd parts looks schizophrenic, to my eye, for instance, and certainly would not have shown up that way back in the day...you often see earlier Supers with the later-style parts, because the later parts seem to be more plentiful. That too appears somewhat unorganized, to my eye. And, self-evidently, such a bike would never have appeared that way when it was first sold.

for what it's worth..
