OFFICIAL POWDERS KEEN BUT DANGEROUS FOLLOWER WITH FLOUR

"Suiveurs" (French for "followers") are becoming increasingly frightening, and there must be some sporting god who allows the Tour de France to race for a whole month without any serious accidents. Between Metz and Dunkirk, and again between Dunkirk and Paris, the official's vehicles had to protect the peloton almost constantly from spectators following the race in cars, on motorbikes, or pedaling bicycles. Motorcyclists and bicyclists are the most dangerous. They do not understand that, by getting to near the racers, they could cause a fall. Between Abbeville and Paris, the Directeur Sportif of one mostly-Italian team was armed with a bag of flour and, when a cyclist appeared to him to be too headstrong, with the motion of a farmer sowing seeds, transformed him into Father Christmas." From "Le Miroir des Sports" No.272, 29 July 1935.
