Robic Crashes Out
Stage winner and Maillot Jaune on Stage 11, viciously attacked by a jealous French National Team on Stage 12, crash victim on Stage 13 - Robic rode on to the stage finish in B=e9ziers, but he was unable to start the next day and had to abandon the 1953 Tour de France.
Robic was a brilliant winner on Stage 11, first to the top
of the Tourmalet, Aspin, and Peyresourde climbs, and had
taken a chunk of time out of the favorites on the French
National Team. But Robic rode for "Ouest", a regional team,
and the next day the French Nationals hatched a plan to
dethrone him, attacking en masse from the start and dropping
Robic into 4th place, 8'50" behind new leader Francois
Mah=e9. The next day, on Stage 13, Robic crashed heavily
while descending the Col du Fauredon, hitting his head and
suffering a concussion. Injured and groggy, Robic sits on
the roadside, his face and posture showing all.
