One of my other pastimes is learning how to make wood bows (bow and arrow type). Larger innertubes make great covers to keep expensive rasps and other woodworking tools from jostling one another in my tool bucket and getting dull.

On-topic, I never did get the hang of patching tubulars. The first set of wheels I laced was to change the rims on my Haral to clinchers. With no truing stand I used the brakes as reference to true the wheel. 20 odd years later they're still on the bike and spinning true. As others have mentioned doing, I typically use patched tubes for spares and try to keep a new tube in the tire. Being something of a boyscout I usually have two spares, patches, and tire boots in my kit.
