Many years ago, I took a Motobecane Grand Record frame and a new Simplex 26.6mm seat post to a local frame builder to have him "fit" it to the frame. The Grand Record came with a 26.6mm seat post which had been badly gouged being inserted and removed, and I didn't want to have the same thing happen to the new Simplex.
This has been discussed on the List before, but my local frame builder (who was a retired GE machinist) asked if I had measured the seat post? I said no, and he proceeded to tell me that many posts are not what they are marked, some being undersized and some oversized. This fact, along with seat tubes which are slightly over or under (or non-round) from various reasons (especially so with production built frames), often makes for a poor fit.
When I picked up the Motobecane the following week, the seat post literally fit like a glove....
This is something we all should all keep in mind especially if we have a "special" seat post we don't want scratched up, or, a frame we don't want damaged!!
