Do you know there is a standing CR joke about a terrible putrid green Meral that about a dozen Cr members tried to give away at Cirque one year, including myself. But the truth be told, it was actually a nice frame despite the ugly color, and if it had been my size, I would have kept it.

But Peugeot had some pretty mad marketting policies, you got the same model a real mule one year, a fabulous machine next. Then you have top of the range with terrible components, cheapos with special stuff... a real mess. And for me they don't have any prestige value whatsoever. Mass-produced stuff. René Herses: no doubt wonderful, beautifully designed machines. The first were totally fabulous one-offs. I'll sum it up with a RH joke a friend and I have: Q: how do you tell your René Herse in a line of 50 identical models from the same year? A: you don't, they all got the same serial number stamped on 'em. OK, that's taking it a bit far, but I think the RH fad has gone way too far, people are missing out on some fabulous stuff which the haksaw and boltcutter stick it on ebay brigade over here are tearing apart as fast as they can for the parts. I'm making myself a lot of enemies, but then you can't live without enemies. The Rochet: they made good and bad, most middle of the road like the one of mine. It's much to small for me to be more than a stunt-city racer, so that's what it'll be.

My favourite bikes: two merals, one a full blown factory racer, the other a cyclotourist with dynapower dynamo with seat tube lever on/off operation, and everything you could dream of. The most underestimated bike on the market is the top of the range Meral, that's a fact. Buy one if you can before people get wise.
