CRers,
Well this past Saturday was the third annual D2R2. First off, for anyone ou tside of New England it was a brutally HOT day. The numbers for the 100k ri de on paper were 64 miles and just under 7500 ft. of climbing. Approximately 40% on dirt roa ds.
Eddie Albert and myself were the only ones with downtube shifters, that I s aw anyway. He was on his Masi GC with only a 41-28 low gear to work with, and 25mm tir es to boot. I was on my '83 Bianchi Cross bike with far more appropriate ge ars (45-28 with a 13-28 cluster) and 32mm tires to float on the loose dirt and steep rocky decents.
This was a tough ride between the heat and the fact that Sandy added a few "bonus" climbs for us this year.
As Eddie said after the ride "when I got to mile 10 and we were already an hour plus in, I knew this was no 4 hour 100k". Myself, I didn't roll in unt il 6.5 hours had passed. GREAT ride though...and I hope some more of you w ill come out and give it a try next year.
