Subject: [CR]TRIUMPH lightweight on eBay

This is not the first of these on eBay, I think Raleigh, for reasons known

only to themselves, revived the Triumph name c. 1983-85, and shipped wha t appear to have been framesets only to the USA. This may indeed be a home UK market product (where Triumph remained a brand longer than it did in the US) but I suspect this is one of these frames shipped to the USA. I am n ot sure if this also had to do with the sale of the Raleigh name in the USA t o Huffy and there was legal reason they badged Raleigh framesets as Triumph.

Actually, it's a dandy looking frame with an unusual and really cool colou r scheme. I think this was the frameset that was sold as a "Team Raleigh" frameset in the team livery in the UK/Europe.. not to be confused with the SBU Ilkeston frames of course.

Triumph had their own range of lightweights before Raleigh purchased them in 1955 (I think that was the year) and under Raleigh, there was a Triumph

badged version of the Lenton Sports. And yes, Triumph is best associated

with the zillions of sturdy three-speed "English racers" that this city, a t least, is still filled with. We boys lucky enough to have real Raleigh o r Rudge three-speed English racers looked down on the boys stuck with downmarket Triumphs, Robin Hoods or Dunelts. And if you had a Schwinn around here, why we didn't even want to be seen with you...
