Not to be nit-picky, but no CR poster I read claimed "that it could not have been his"... I, and others, merely questioned if it was or was not, because we thought he was a shorter man. It turned out that we were mistaken.
To avoid all that, you just needed to substantiate that claim if you could... That would have avoided all that speculation. All you had to say was "Hey gang, it is really one of Dr. Graves old bikes because I am the seller and I got it from X, blah blah." Simple.
If you stay silent, you just give rise the speculation! While you are most likely a perfectly honest and knowledgeable person/seller, no one knows that initially and we are plagued by many unscrupulous sellers out there! So the burden is on you as the seller to allay those fears and make bidders comfortable with you & your offering.
While I am picking on you, I am willing to bet that better quality and more pictures, plus some proof of that provenance, would have resulted in a much higher final price!? It's a tough, judgemental world out there in eBay!
Anyway, I hope you had a good sale and best luck in the future.
