Clyde: You might consider taking a look at the selection of cleats available at Ye llow Jersey in Madison, Wisconsin (www.yellowjersey.org). They carry a tra ditional slotted cleat which mounts onto shoes that have a modern Look 3 bo lt pattern. That way, you can use a modern shoe with a classic pedal with a toe clip/strap set up. A company called Rivat also made something compar able. I use them on my winter shoes.
